Stolen from the Kenton County, KY fair

14 Aug 1997

The prize winning, Grand Champion Quilt has been stolen from the Kenton County, KY fair. It was taken yesterday. It was raining and there were not a lot of people around. IMHO - people should be in that area all the times to protect against this sort of thing, but KY is a generally trusting place and they thought I was nuts! Being from NJ, I know better. The fair board is offering a $500 reward for it's return.

The quilt that was stolen was the Cathedral Window quilt that took the woman 11 years to complete. The description of that one is as follows. It's probably a queen size quilt, we never actually unfolded it all the way. It has white windows in the center in the form of a rectangle, then a rectangle about two squares wide of either light teal or purple. A few more rows of white and then another rectangular row of teal or purple. The center of the windows were all the same print but different shades. It was a small floral print, some with a white backround, some with a purple backround and some with a teal backround, coordinating with the colors of the window. This quilt is more of a "coverlet" as I don't think it had any batting in the middle, if it did it is very thin batting. It was quilted inside the window and completely hand stitched. The windows themselves were no more than two or three inches a piece. I have spread the word to many people that if the woman can get me a picture I will somehow get it on the Internet. I wish I could describe it better.

If you see this quilt, please let me know.

This is exactly why I refuse to enter DH's grandmother's quilts in the antique quilt category! And people thought I was being paranoid. It is also a good idea to attach your label before you quilt and quilt through it. It's much harder to take off that way.

Thanks for your help,
